About Derek

In 2004 voters of Sacramento County elected Derek Minnema to the American River Flood Control District on his first attempt at public office, defeating an incumbent by garnering over 21,000 votes (28%) in a four-candidate field. His at-large district covers a large portion of the County of Sacramento. He is seeking re-election in the November General Election of 2008.

As a Trustee on the American River Flood Control District, Minnema works hard to ensure that our levees are maintained with the utmost fiscal responsibility, safeguarding our property values and keeping insurance rates low.

As a registered Civil Engineer, Minnema works for Mark Thomas & Company, a full service civil engineering design firm. He joined the MTCo team in 2003 where he has since facilitated the design and approval of projects in Northern California ranging in size from $30,000 to $3 million. He has experience in transportation and land development, and previously worked for 3 years at Rail Technology, Inc.

He has been on the design team for the following projects: Kaiser South Sacramento Expansion Project, Del Paso Blvd Angled Parking Project, Red Hawk Parkway Interchange, and is currently working on the roadway improvements for the North Stockton Railroad Grade Separations and Bridge Replacements Project.

Derek has served as an officer for various community and professional organizations. He is Past President of Teichert Toastmasters and Secretary for the Younger Member Forum of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He is a graduate of the City of Sacramento Management Academy and is a member of the Sacramento Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. Writings by Minnema have been published in local community newsletters and he also has been a guest speaker at community meetings.

Derek lives adjacent to the American River Parkway and just recently played an entire 18 holes of golf without losing a single golf ball.
